For Alex McQuilkin’s ARTS 340 Painting II class, we worked on a number of different paintings. The first of the year was a painting remix, where I took Edward Hopper’s ‘Intermission’ painting and replaced the figure with a skeleton while making the colors bluer in tone. In order to begin this project, I was asked to draw a sketch of the painting first, blocking out the spaces by the amount of light present, thus the annotations. The second painting is of a photo I took of a chair in my childhood room right before moving out. I wanted to paint it to remember the room and the significance of the chair in my life. Since I already had a photo, a sketch wasn’t necessary, but I still wanted o make one so that I could get a better sense of the space and proportions of everything.
